Mate Hollos: Rhapsody
Máté Hollós (1954– ) in his 5 minutes long piano piece Rhapsody follows neither the form and the mood of Liszt’s rhapsodies demanding passion and instrumental virtuosity, nor the folksong based slow and fast structure of the Bartók rhapsodies. The piece composed for the commission of the 5th Szeged International Béla Bartók Piano Competition creates a rhapsodical feeling by strongly contrasting motives and changes in dynamics as well as melody forming. There is also a contrast of the tempo between the meditative first part and a fast second part of the form after which the earlier motives are recalled while at the end a rough gesture cuts the process.
