Laszlo Dubrovay (1943– )
I composed this work at the request of Miklós Sugár for a concert by the EAR Ensemble in 2008. It is dedicated to Zoltán Varga and Róbert Káip. An unusual feature of the concerto is that without an orchestral accompaniment, the two soloists "compete" with one another. Knowing the exceptional technical and viruoso abilities of the performers I composed a three movement work in which they can show what they and their instruments can do. In the powerful first movement (Con fuoco) we hear overtone-glissandos, lip trills, valve trills, the low register, the high register, echo-effects and double-tongued progressions organized into binary form.In the second movement (Moderato) ternary form is built from modulations of timbre, floating evaporating flutter-tonguings, and note progressions of simultaneous lip trills and valve trills. The third movement Libero /Allegro assai), after the introduction (notes with dynamic echoes and lip-vibrations), is a very fast, virtuoso rondo, in which we hear staccatos, glissando harmonics, and humorous sounds made with a wah-wah mute. In the second episode the theme from the second movement appears in a different medium, after which the return of the second rondo theme – with blockings – mixes together still more sound elements. The coda, after recalling the fifth-echo and lip-vibration motives of the introduction, closes the work with an overtone-glissando punchline.
